Digital Photo Imaging Tools at FAYFOTO
Our clients have increasingly been requesting photographic images in digital form. FAYFOTO has been providing digital images since mid-1998, and scans for even longer than that. However, recent additions to our camera bag have expanded our capabilities dramatically, and we want you to know about them! With the PhaseOne LightPhase back on a Hasselblad, and Nikon's groundbreaking 35mm-based D1 and D1x we now have the capability to produce images of the very highest quality on location or in the studio.
Nikon’s D1 and D1x Digital Cameras
These amazing tools handle just like Nikon's top of the line F5 35mm camera, but there’s no film!
The image reproduced here (Steve’s daughter Becky) demonstrates the freedom these cameras provide - they are light, flexible and predictable even hand-held in available light, and have all the advantages of interchangable Nikon lenses and all the lighting options of professional photography including sophisticated umbrella lighting for portraits. As you can see, the digital images produced by these cameras work spectacularly well for web pages, but this reduced version can't give you a full sense of how clear and sharp and smooth the full size image is.
The D1 produces a 7.5 megabyte file - enough to print 6.56x10 inches at 200 DPI-more than enough resolution for many PR, corporate and industrial assignments. The D1x boasts even greater resolution - easily 7 x 10 inches at 300 DPI, and superb color rendition. Generally the camera files are optimized and written to CDs at our studio but our photographers can bring along a lap top computer to the assignment; your image files can be transferred to a Zip disk on the spot, eliminating delays for processing, contact sheets, courier delivery and scanning.
PhaseOne Light Phase
The Studio at FAYFOTO is pleased and excited to announce professional, high resolution digital capture!
We have installed the PhaseOne Light Phase instant capture digital back, and are finding it produces spectacular results, delivering an extremely clean 18 megabyte RGB file.
The image reproduced here was created for a client located in Oregon, for a new product announcement. The unit and the circuit board detail were shot in our studio with the digital camera; the client emailed an EPS file of the logo. The prototype unit had only one cooling fan, but the shipping version will have two. We were able to duplicate and scale the fan (and its reflection!), create the entire composite within hours, and receive approval based on an emailed file!

FAYFOTO’s digital imaging tools aren’t limited to cameras. Our scanning department utilizes equipment by Nikon and Polaroid to provide digital files to clients for whom we have shot assignments on film. We are a Macintosh-based operation. In addition to recent versions of Photoshop, we offer a highly trained staff with many years of experience in optimizing scans or digital captures and, when needed, sophisticated retouching capabilities. We can also output images to our archival inkjet printer.
FAYFOTO saw the direction in which our industry was headed many years ago and took steps to obtain the equipment and training necessary so that today we can confidently offer you and your clients a very strong digital imaging resource.
